Out With The Old, In With The New @ the Center Oliver Library!

We’ve been working on our New Year’s Resolutions for 2022, have you? Students are being mindful about showing kindness, helping out at home with chores, staying more organized, reading at night, and just being the best version of ourselves that we can be!

Our COL January featured titles include Negative Cat by Sophie Blackall and Keeping the City Going by Brian Floca.

11 years to write a book…that’s how long it took Sophie Blackall to finally finish her book title, Negative Cat. Our Center-Stanton students connected with this cat in the fact that despite all of his negative behaviors, he enjoyed being read to. The cat was rescued at an animal shelter. We know that the author was inspired to write and finish this story from her experiences at an animal shelter. At the shelter the author saw the kids reading to cats. Students concluded by answering discussion questions with partners and added illustrations to their writings.

Keeping the City Going by Brian Floca really showcased our essential workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. There are numerous examples in this book of workers who showed up, when the rest of us might have stayed home. The students reflected on how some parts of the world were shut down during the pandemic, yet our garbage was still picked up, mail was still delivered, our internet kept working, our grocery stores were being stocked, workers continued to provide medical care, others provided transportation, and so on. Meanwhile some of us dealt with the joys and hardships of isolation. This story took a much needed look at what we have all observed this last year. It emphasized that we were able to get through difficult times. It enhanced our passion for others in their job titles. Keeping the City Going sparked a conversation about the new Covid Omicron variant and how the previous variant has prepared us for what might come again.

Happy New Year!
